Key Technology

Redwood’s simpler, more cost effective integrated power and control platform is comprised of four key technologies.

Efficient Centralized Power Drive

In order to improve upon today’s overlay lighting control systems, Redwood has invented an entirely new, centralized power system- the Redwood Engine- capable of individually powering up to 64 LED light fixtures via low voltage network cable.

Best-in-class Dimming

By their digital, programmable nature, LED fixtures dim very well. In fact, when dimmed, LED fixtures operate cooler, run more efficiently, and unlike fluorescents, dimming LEDs will make them last longer. In Redwood’s centralized drive architecture, Redwood is also able to provide “best-in-class” dimming by incorporating highly configurable, precise “16 bit” dimming, enabling very precise (65,000 steps) control of dimming. Applied inside a per-fixture LED driver, this sophisticated dimming would be expensive to build, and likely cost more, but since Redwood is able to leverage the same dimming system for 64 lights -- full range, best-in-class, individualized dimming is available per fixture for all lights driven by the Redwood Engine at no extra charge.

Novel communication

Redwood has also invented a new way to integrate communications and power delivery on the same twisted pair of wire. We needed to have support for 64 continuous, bi-directional, communications across all fixtures, but also provide “enterprise grade” communications quality. Enterprise grade means that the communications are always fast (measured in milliseconds), always reliable (greater than 99.99% successful), and in a system with appropriate scaling from 1 to 50,000 fixtures.

Smart lights, smart buildings

With efficient power delivery, integrated with reliable, and scalable communications on the same network cable, we needed something to talk about. The Redwood adapter is the world’s smallest integrated motion/daylight/temperature/power sensing platform. Deployed at every light, the adapter provides rich and detailed environmental data about your building. In fact, it's also the first and only sensor design that also profiles the fixture thereby informing the engine about how to power and control the light automatically in a "plug and play" fashion.
